June 2014 Events Roundup

Friday, June 6, 4:00-7:00pm: Etsy Craft Party with Fenton Street Market at Kefa Cafe & Pennyworth Thrift Shop. Stop by two of our favorite shops on Bonifant Street for an evening of crafting and community. The theme this year is bringing new meaning to old photographs, so bring some to use.

Sunday, June 8: #TakomaSunday! This is worth leaving Silver Spring for, we promise. Stop by Old Town Takoma for the Farmers Market, Jazz Festival, and Grant Avenue Market. Shopping, jazz and, maybe, just maybe, a beer and oysters at Republic.

Thursday, June 12, 600pm Karaoke Night Fundraiser hosted by Kristus Ratliff at Fire Station 1. Come help raise funds for Girls Rock! DC Financial Aid Fund. Have some drinks. Sing your favorite jam as long as it’s not Journey.

Saturday, June 14, 10:00am-9:00pm: Silver Spring Blues Festival. Two stages (Fenton Street Market & Ellsworth Drive by fountain), over 14 acts playing for over 10 hours make this the best homegrown music festival in Silver Spring.

Wednesday, June 18 5:00pm-7:00pm: Cuneiform Records is hosting The Kandinsky Effect at United Therapeutics Biowall Plaza. Super cool record label, hosting a super cool band, in a super cool venue. Click here for details. Click here to RSVP through Facebook.

Wednesday, June 18 – Sunday, June 22: AFI DOCS, or as we still call it: SilverDocs. They moved a bunch of the festivities to DC last year, but there will be plenty of great documentaries screening at the AFI Silver plus a freebie by the Ellsworth Fountain on June 20, 9:00pm.

Friday, June 20: Docs in Progress 10 Year Anniversary Open House. Join Silver Spring film makers at their location in downtown Silver Spring for some drinks and the opportunity to meet some cool peoples.

Tuesday, June 24: Primary Election at your local polling place. Or vote early at the Civic Building starting June 12 through June 18, 10:00am-8:00pm. Don’t know who is running for what or where you vote? More info on voting here, on the candidates here and we’ll be posting the videos from our District 5 Speed Dating this week.

Tuesdays in June, 7:00-8:00pm: work up a sweat before you grab dinner at Downtown Silver Spring’s free Zumba class. Or just watch people sweat from the patio at Nando’s while you sip sangria. We’ll leave the choice up to you.

Pete Tan
A DC Native, people say I'm rude and abrasive; I say I'm passionate. I've been working in marketing since 2005. My brothers and I paid Geppi's rent through the 80s and 90s. My relief at an indoor wavepool never materializing in Silver Spring is balanced by my disappointment that City Place has dozens of shuttered storefronts. I love what you've done with your hair.
