Events Roundup – September 2014

Saturday, September 6, 3:00-10:00pm: 11th Annual Jazz Festival featuring the Preservation Hall Jazz Band of New Orleans. Want to see how many people can fit on Veterans Plaza at one time? Here’s your chance! Oh, and there’ll be great music too.

Monday, September 8, 8:30-9:30am: get up early for Creative Boost with Third Space Wellness. The latest in Creative Colony’s free morning workshop series will focus on how to thrive while stressed out at work. The Third Space Wellness ladies will give you practical tips for bringing your A game to all that you do. RSVP required.

Saturday, September 13, 10:00am-4:00pm: Celebrate Five Years of the Fenton Street Market! Can you believe FSM started five years ago this month with a test market in the “old lot” at the corner of Silver Spring Ave & Fenton St? Show your love for our home grown market and stop by for cupcakes, balloons, music, plus the usual shopping.

Sunday, September 14, 12:00-5:00pm: Maker Faire Silver Spring at the Civic Building. If you missed this event last year, don’t make the same mistake again! Taking up the Plaza & inside the building, the Maker Faire is all about art, science, technology, craft and engineering. There will be loads of DIY and hands on exhibits for kids and adults alike.

Beginning September 18: the AFI presents the 25th edition of its Latin American Film Festival. It highlights the best cinema from Latin America, plus films from Spain and Portugal. We’re looking forward to seeing the US premiere of Colombia’s Gente de Bien, which debuted at Cannes in May. We suggest pairing a movie with some yummy tapas and sangria across the street at La Malinche.

Saturday, September 27, 12:00-6:00pm: South Silver Spring Street Fest on the 8000 block of Kennett will have craft vendors, live music, food, drink, and a moon bounce for kids. Come out and celebrate around the corner from the actual Silver Spring.

Mondays in September, 7:00-10:00pm: Bilingual Karaoke at El Golfo. We love karaoke. Err, we love watching others make fools of themselves singing karaoke. Our favorite Long Branch restaurant gives you twice the fun with their weekly bilingual sing-along. Go early and grab some happy hour beers (ends at 6pm).

ONGOING:

Saturdays, 9:00am-1:00pm: Silver Spring Farmers Market
Saturdays, 10:00am-4:00pm: Fenton Street Market

A DC Native, people say I'm rude and abrasive; I say I'm passionate. I've been working in marketing since 2005. My brothers and I paid Geppi's rent through the 80s and 90s. My relief at an indoor wavepool never materializing in Silver Spring is balanced by my disappointment that City Place has dozens of shuttered storefronts. I love what you've done with your hair.
