Happy New Year!

Here are some ways to start 2015 off with a bang in Silver Spring.

Through Sunday, January 11: Extend the holiday season with a trip up to Brookside Gardens for their annual Winter Display. Free & open daily 10:00am-5:00pm, you can check out greenhouses full of poinsettias, model trains, & festive decorations. Hit up Nava Thai or Pollo Rico in Wheaton on your way back.

Wednesday, January 14, 7:00pm: Budget Hearing at the Civic Building. Sound off to the County Executive about budget priorities for the coming fiscal year. Want more funding for VanGo? Or more dog parks? This is your opportunity to speak directly to The Man.

Monday, January 19 (time TBD – check here): celebrate Martin Luther King Jr Day with a free showing of the documentary King: A Filmed Record…Montgomery to Memphis at the AFI Silver. Or participate in Day of Service activities at the Civic Building from 10:00am-2:00pm with a group of your neighbors.

Friday, January 23, 7:00pm: PechaKucha Vol II at Pyramid Atlantic. A $5 ticket gets you into a night of short presentations (we do mean short: each one is 20, 20 second slides!) mixed with booze, snacks, and your neighbors. Click here to see what went down the first time SSI, Just Up the Pike & Creative Colony hosted PechaKucha in Silver Spring.

Sunday, January 25: Deadline to register for Leo’s Run, a 5K run/walk on February 1. The event is organized by the Mowery family to honor their stillborn son Leo, who would have been raised in the the East Silver Spring community where the run will take place.

Saturdays, 10:00am-1:00pm: The heartiest farmers & shoppers in the region head to Silver Spring for the weekly Farmers Market. (Note their shorter winter hours!) Warm up with a spin around the Ice Rink or watch the skaters from the warmth of Adega Wine Cellars.

A DC Native, people say I'm rude and abrasive; I say I'm passionate. I've been working in marketing since 2005. My brothers and I paid Geppi's rent through the 80s and 90s. My relief at an indoor wavepool never materializing in Silver Spring is balanced by my disappointment that City Place has dozens of shuttered storefronts. I love what you've done with your hair.
